In a groundbreaking development for motorcycle enthusiasts and custom builders, Belgian designer Ben Surain, in collaboration with Death to Gas (D2G), has introduced the DropIN 72V electric crate motor. This seamless solution converts traditional motorcycles into electric-powered machines. This innovation promises to simplify the electrification process, making it more accessible to a broader range of builders and riders.
The DropIN 72V system is a comprehensive, plug-and-play unit that integrates the motor, controller, and battery into a single package. Designed to fit directly into motorcycles originally equipped with the BASE 50 engine, it also offers mounting options compatible with various gas-powered frames under 200cc. This versatility makes it an ideal choice for retrofitting classic models like the Honda Cub, Super Cub, Dax, and Grom.
From prototype to production
Ben Surain’s journey to this innovation began with the E-Core concept. This prototype aimed at replacing small combustion engines with electric alternatives. After gaining attention in 2022, Surain partnered with an American investor to refine and expand the concept. This to the development of the DropIN 72V unit. Now, D2G operates in the U.S. and is actively seeking distributors across Europe.

Beyond its application in custom café racers, the DropIN 72V motor has shown promise in pitbike racing. By converting internal combustion engine mini GP bikes into electric racers, D2G has enabled indoor racing without noise or emissions. Early tests indicate performance improvements, with track records improving by several seconds.
The kit includes the motor system, battery, charger, display, throttle box, wire harness, keyed ignition, and drive mode selector. Priced at $1,999, it offers a cost-effective solution for those looking to transition to electric power without the complexities typically associated with such conversions.
